Slovenian builder Greenline has put sustainability at the forefront as the company introduces their new Greenline 58 Fly Hybrid at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September.
The 58, which is the builder’s flagship, is driven by the company’s next-generation HDrive propulsion system that harnesses diesel-electric technology to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions.
The combination of hybrid technology with lithium-ion batteries and large and efficient solar panel arrays makes the new 58 capable of motoring under electric power for up to 20 miles at six knots.
“Greenline Yachts’ new 6G HDrive draws on 16 years of constant development,” said owner and Managing Director Vladimir Zinchenko, when making the announcement.
“We’ve been in this game since our launch, so our yachts are miles ahead of the competition when it comes to efficient and silent hybrid propulsion. We’re excited to be showcasing the technology alongside our concept of Responsible Yachting at Cannes through our flagship model.”
The Greenline 58 can be configured with a flybridge and hard top or, in a recent launch, as a coupe. The latter offers a larger solar array and has a low enough air draft to make it compatible with Great Loop bridge clearances.
The HDrive system begins with twin 175-horsepower diesel engines that will drive the 58 at up to 26 knots. While this is hardly “sustainable”, the 58 can get you where you want to go in a hurry.
As noted, under electric power the 58 can go six knots for 20 miles, which will be useful in and around marinas, entering quiet coves and harbor touring with friends.
During extensive trials over the last 16 years, Greenline discovered that on longer trips fuel efficiency and thus carbon emissions can be greatly reduced by running in true hybrid mode.
One diesel engine is run at a moderate cruising speed while the other motor runs in electric mode. The diesel engine’s alternator charges the battery bank that in turn provides the juice for the electric motor.
The 58 has a three-cabin, three-head accommodation plan, with the full-width master cabin under the salon and the large guest cabin in the fore peak. The third cabin can have either twin berths or can be configured as a home office.
Innovative and imaginative, Greenline has once again established their commitment to hybrid-technology and sustainable cruising. Read more here.
