Yacht designer Chris Hood and Maine boat builder Lyman Morse have had a long and creative partnership. The Hood 35LM and Hood 57LM are both modern classics that combine Downeast style with comfortable accommodations and stellar performance.
In 2025, Lyman Morse with launch the all-new Hood 42 LM Flybridge again designed by Hood. Like her sisters, the 42 will have a sweeping sheer line and a very traditional looking hull and cabin. But, like her sisters, she will also have a thoroughly modern underbody that will provide excellent stability and tracking, will reduce pounding in head seas and will provide an astonishing turn of sped. The new boat will have a top end of 39 knots and a cruising speed of 30 knots.
Lyman Morse is building the new 42 now. The hull is cold-molded of Douglas Fir and Western Red Cedar and epoxy. This composite build technique produces boats that feel different from fiberglass or metal boats. The ride is softer, smoother and quieter. Plus, the wood hull and decks provide great sound and heat insulation.
Note that in the illustrations Lyman Morse has published, the cabin sides and the flying bridge have varnished exterior wood finishes. This is a distinctive look and will make the boat stand out as an heirloom quality yacht in any harbor.
Hull number one has a simple, functional and open plan for the salon and cabin. The salon has a dinette, the galley and the inside helm with two forward facing bench seats. The large, attractively curved windows fill the salon with light. Varnished teak or mahogany offset by white trim will underscore the traditional DNA built into every Lyman Morse boat.
The cabin has a double berth and storage and hanging space for a couple spending a week or more aboard. The head and shower have their own compartments which keeps the dampness from showering contained.
For many boat owners, especially those who love classic yacht designs combined with modern build techniques, a Lyman Morse boat is something to dream of. And, the new 42 LM will only enhance those dreams.
