There are two very lucky powerboat racers in Arizona this week after what happened to their racing cat at 200 miles-per-hours. They lived.
Last Saturday on Arizona’s Lake Havisaw, the Freedom One Racing Teamwas taking part in the annual three-quarter-mile speed run race with two crew aboard their Skater high-speed cat.
The boat is designed to lift just onto the surface if the water, almost flying, where it has the least drag and thus the highest optimum speed. It ewas a gusty day and as the Skater hit 200-mph, the bows lifted, caught the wind and the boat soared high into the air.
It rose to 30 feet and then flipped over backward and cartwheeled downwards until it crashed. The two crew were inside their cabins, with helmets and racing safety harnesses. They were able to free them selves and the team reported that they were banged up but not seriously hurt. A miracle.
The funny conclusion to the story is that the Skater flew, flipped and cartwheeled just far enough to cross the finish line and recored the fastest top speed of the day.
