New Krogen 60 Open Long-Range Voyager Does It All

The new Krogen 60 Open was introduced at the Palm Beach boat show earlier this spring and proved to be a real show-stopper. The 60 Open is simply huge and offers all the space and accommodation a family might need for extended living aboard and far-flung adventures.

While the 60 Open carries all of the Krogen trawler DNA, the new design has really pushed the envelope on the size of the living and working spaces. It looks and feels like a much bigger boat.

The afterdeck is truly an outside living room with a hard cover for sun and rain protection. It spans almost 150 square feet and leads down to the teak swim platform which is also spacious enough for rigging SCUBA gear or other water toys.

The side deck on the starboard side leads to the fore deck and outdoor access to the pilot house. The deck wraps around the bow and halfway down the port side, so you have good strategic access for handling mooring lines on both sides of the boat.

The bridge deck has twin helm seats and a spacious C-shaped dinette with two tables. By splitting the tables in two, it means that getting in and out of the dinette won’t involve climbing over your mates.  Visibility from the bridge is excellent and having a T-top means you will spend a lot of time running the boat and relaxing up here.

The aft end of the flying bridge is the boat deck where you can carry a 12-foot inflatable. This is facilitated by a Steelhead crane for launching and retrieved the tender.

Expansive spaces are what the 60 Open is all about and you really get the picture when you walk into the salon and galley area. By not running the port side deck all the way aft, Krogen has been able to push the salon all the way to the port gunnel, adding 50 square feet or so to the area.

They make great use of this space with a huge dinette to port that looks like it could seat six or more for meals. Across from it you’ll find two easy chairs with a small table between them.

The galley is integral to the salon living space, so you feel like you are in an old fashion country kitchen where people always seem to congregate. Fitted out with a Wolf stove and oven, a Subzero fridge-freezer, a dishwasher and a trash compacter, this is as upscale a kitchen as you would find in any luxury apartment.

One important detail is the addition of a day head to the salon which is also close to the bridge. This means crew can use the facilities without going below to the sleeping cabins which each has its own private en-suite head.

The bridge has a proper ship-like feel to it with twin helm chairs that are high enough to make visibility through the front windows, which are slightly raked forward, unusually good. The sofa/dinette is raised as well so those relaxing will have expansive seascapes. The bench is long enough for an off-watch adult to sleep while on passage, something I have done several times.

The 60 Open is a three-cabin boat and Krogen has made wonderful use of the generous beam. The master cabin is amidships and has a full king-size berth, a walk-in closet and a large head with twin sinks.  The shower stall is similar to one you might have at home, larger than is usual on a cruising boat.

The guest cabin takes up the forepeak and has a queen-size bed, drawers and ample hanging space. The head is smaller than the master’s version but still had a separate shower stall.

The third cabin can be configured with twin single beds, with drawers and hanging space. Or, you can opt to build a home office with a single pull-out bunk.

The engine room, which houses the twin Deere 200-horsepower engines and the Northern Lights genset, is simply vast. It has over eight feet of headroom and plenty of space to walk around and work on all three engines. Plus, there is room for a water-maker, and all of the house HVAC.

The twin fuel tanks have an 1,800-gallon capacity.  In trawler mode, the boat will have an impressive range of 3,467 miles at 8.6 knots.  In fast-trawler mode at 10.6 knots, it still can cover almost a thousand miles.

The new Krogen 60 Open delivers a lot of very attractive qualities and will appeal to couples and families who want a stylish, beautifully built and large home-away-from home that can also take them cross oceans.
