Bering Marine, which is a subsidiary of Bering Yachts, the Turkish builder of large expedition yachts, recently introduced the ne BM 50 SE. The SE stands for Swift Explorer and being 14 feet larger than the next model in the line, the BM 50 is the company’s new flagship.
Berinig Marine builds recreational cruising catamarans of aluminum in rugged, working craft style. The designs all have hydrofoils between the hulls that provide lift and improve fuel efficiency. The foils also act as stabilizers that keep the twin-hull designs from pitching and yawing.
The builder’s intention is to combine the larger living spaces of a cat with the durability and long range of a powerful hydrofoil. Carrying 800 gallons of fuel and powered by four 400-horsepower outboards, the 50 will have nearly 1,000 miles of range and will be capable of weathering the rough sea one is bound to encounter along the way. The builder expects the boat to cruise at 25 to 35 knots with a top speed of 42 knots.
The new BM50 SE has 17 feet of beam, a wide flat fore deck, a big cockpit with a back porch between the engines and a spacious flying bridge. So, there are large social areas outside for family and crew to enjoy.
The flying bridge has the upper helm plus a lounging area with a an L-shaped sofa and table. Behind it there is room for a large dinghy and the crane needed to hoist and deploy it. This is a nice touch on a 50-footer made possible the wide beam.
The spacious salon has a four-person dinette to starboard and the galley and large storage lockers to port. Between them there is enough floor space for dancing. There are two, double sleeping cabins with en suit heads down three steps going forward.
If you are looking for an expedition-style cruising boat with long range and a brawny aluminum hull, the new BM 50 SE might be just right.
