The all-weather, 40-knot, easy-riding SARGO 33 was just introduced at the Seattle boat show. The two-cabin, one-head cruiser is made in Finland, but it would be just as much at home in the Pacific Northwest, the coast of Maine, on Georgian Bay or other parts of the Great Loop.
Full disclosure: Several years ago Billy Black, the photographer, and I spent a few days (and nights) on the 31-foot version of this boat, cruising in mid-coast Maine. We found it comfortable, seaworthy and easy to handle in a great variety of conditions, including navigating through Maine’s infamous fog.
As opposed to the 31, which had a single Volvo sterndrive, the SARGO 33 in Seattle is powered by twin Volvo D4 300 sterndrives. The combined 600 horsepower drive the boat to over a 40-knot top speed. The deep-V hull slices through rough water, and the boat tracks well and turns quickly. (The 29 was really fun to drive.)
The design of the SARGO 33 pays particular attention to safety. The walk-around, single-level side decks are deep to keep even children safe underway. And there’s room for a family inside the salon, which has doors opening to the side decks next to the helm and the co-pilot’s seat, and another glass door opening to the cockpit. If you want more ventilation, you can open the sliding sunroof or the rear window.
In the salon, a large L-shaped settee is on the port side with an adjustable teak table; the galley, with a three-burner gas stove and oven, is to starboard. There’s an adjustable bucket seat at the helm, plus a 12” Garmin chartplotter and a bow thruster control.
The master cabin is forward with a V-berth, a head and separate shower stall. The guest cabin, tucked under the raised dinette, can be fit with two single berths or a double.
