One American was killed, two were injured, and one is missing after their 34-foot powerboat hit something at night near Bimini in the Bahamas. The two who were injured were flown to the U.S. for medical treatment, and the Coast Guard and Bahamian authorities were searching for the missing woman.
Bahamas authorities said that officers at the Alice Town Police Station in Bimini received a distress call from a boater near Turtle Rock Cay, about two nm south of Bimini, about midnight on Friday. Members of the Royal Bahamas Defense Force found two people hurt on the boat, a 34-foot Everglades named Stand Firm (see the bow of the boat above).
They said the boat hit an object near Turtle Rock and all four people on board were thrown into the air. A man and a woman fell overboard. The two on the boat were injured and were taken to the Bimini Clinic for treatment. Trinity Air Ambulance flew them the next morning to Broward Health North in Deerfield Beach.
They were identified as Josbel Fernandez, 34, and Violeta Khouri, 31, both from South Florida.
About 8:30 the next morning searchers found the body of Javier Marcos Perez, of Miami, near Turtle Rock Cay. Officers from the Royal Bahamas Marine Division and the U.S. Coast Guard continued the search for the missing woman.
The boat had been going from Luna Beach on Bimini to Honeymoon Harbour, a few miles south, at the time of the accident. Read more:
