Bering Starts Line of Power Cats

Bering Yachts, the Turkish builder that makes rugged, go-anywhere, long-range explorer yachts, just announced that they’re working on a new line of power catamarans, starting with a 60 and then moving on to an 80.

In making the move, Bering joins a growing list of powerboat builders that is either switching to multihull yachts or is adding multihulls to their traditional lineup. In Bering’s case, the cats will join its fleet of monohulls that runs from 65 to 145 feet.

But the cats will carry on Bering’s goal of building aluminum displacement boats that are designed for distant adventure cruising. Indeed, Bering’s last boat, a 76 Explorer, has a range of more than 4,000 nm, powered by twin 404-hp Cummins diesels.

The new 60 cat is designed to cruise for 3,000 nm at 10 knots, with a 14-knot top end. The company says it will be like previous Berings, but with two hulls.

The cat has large seating areas on both sides of the foredeck. The salon, making use of the extra space available on a catamaran, has a lower helm on the port side, with two seats; a large, home-sized dining table is opposite to starboard. Aft, a U-shaped sofa and table are to port; a U-shaped galley is to starboard.

The large cockpit is a major social area, using that cat’s 24-foot-plus beam. Five steps on each side lead down to the swim platform that can be lowered into the water for swimming or watersports.

Below, the basic layout calls for four staterooms, all with en suite heads, although owners can order as many as six. Each hull has a large stateroom, with a walkaround bed, aft; a smaller stateroom, with two beds, is forward.

Berings are made in Antalya, Turkey, with offices in Fort Lauderdale.

Specs.: LOA: 59’; Beam: 24’5”; Draft: 4’5”; Disp.: 99,207 lbs.; Fuel: 2,641 gals.; Water: 634 gals.; Power: NA.
