There’s good news from The Moorings and Sunsail charter fleets in the British Virgin Islands, some of the best cruising grounds in the world.
The Moorings and Sunsail, its sister company, already run the largest fleet of charter sail and power boats in the BVI. But now they’ve made a $70 million investment in new boats that will bring their combined fleet to a record 254 yachts.
The $70 million accounts for a total of 78 new yachts – 19 sailing monohulls, 35 sailing catamarans, and 24 power catamarans – all arriving just in time for the peak sailing season in the Caribbean.
The new delivery includes three new models, all The Moorings charter versions of Leopard power catamarans: The Moorings 403PC, which just won a European Powerboat of the Year award; The Moorings 464PC, and The Moorings 534PC, which won the Multihull of the Year award when it was first launched a few years ago.
The new influx reflects the growth of the charter business in the BVI, which has experienced double-digit growth annually for the past few years. New direct flights from Miami to Tortola have contributed to that growth.
The Moorings and Sunsail also have invested in personnel recently, hiring more workers in response to the growing demand. The Moorings & Sunsail Marina now has some 300 employees.
“As a business, we have invested heavily in our BVI operation,” said Josie Tucci, VP of sales and marketing for The Moorings and Sunsail. “We take great care to ensure a welcoming experience for our guests, and have gone to great lengths to maximize the guest experience through our marina revitalization project and new fleet replenishment.”
The Moorings started with six boats in the BVI in 1969. It and Sunsail are now part of Travelopia Group, the world’s largest collection of specialized travel brands with more than 50 independently operated brands. Travelopia, in turn, is owned by the global investment firm of KKR.
