AB Yachts in Viareggio, Italy, just launched its latest AB 80, a luxury speedster that the company calls “a real Formula 1 car of the seas.”
Powered by three 2,000-hp MAN V12 diesels, the sleek, silver and sporty AB 80 tops out at 55 knots. AB says it has a range of 500 nm at 45 knots, something few other builders can achieve.
With a state-of-the-art aerodynamic design and a composite hull, the new AB 80 is designed for family trips, a very fast getaway, or simply an extra adrenaline rush. It can be run by an owner-operator or a crew. The company says it’s “easy to use and operate for family holidays and long cruises, but the perfect luxury day boat to get wherever you desire and discover new places with extremely reduced cruising times.”
It’s definitely not for shrinking violets. Indeed, the AB website says “Each one is unique, yet they all have a single imperative: To thrill.”
Inside, the AB 80 has three cabins for six guests, with en suite heads, plus one cabin and head for two crew. The interior is bright and filled with light, and doors from the salon (“a loft on the sea,” according to AB) open to the large aft cockpit. The galley on the main deck can also serve as a very large bar, in something like a transformer arrangement.
In case you need to ask, the AB 80 costs about $8 million. If you’re waiting for something a bit larger, the company’s AB 100 is next to the 80 at the Viareggio dock, undergoing early sea trials. It’s supposed to top out at 59 knots.
