Yanmar and Aspen Power Catamarans just announced a partnership where Aspen will use Yanmar’s 250-hp diesel in new 32-foot Aspen C100 power cats.
The two companies said that the combination of the new Yanmar with Aspen’s unconventional asymmetrical proa type hulls will set new standards in the power catamaran field. Indeed, they said that the new Yanmar 4LV250 achieved an eye-opening 4.1 mpg at 18 mph in the Aspen C100, a 32 percent increase in efficiency over previous engines.
Larry Graf, who founded Aspen in 2008, said the new Yanmar was also light, smooth and quiet. He praised Yanmar for its innovative technology, reliability and easy cold starts.
Aspen has been making the C100 for more than ten years, and it’s one of the company’s most popular models. Its size makes it easy to handle and appealing to a couple or a small family.
Using the cat’s full 10-foot beam, the large master cabin forward has a king-sized bed, something you usually don’t find in 32-foot boats. It also has quarter berth tucked under the galley.
In the salon, the galley is to port and the dinette is to starboard; it seats four and converts to a double berth. The cockpit aft has a fridge and sink and enough room for fishing or entertaining.
Aspen’s power cat fleet now runs from 28 to 40 feet. They all have the company’s patented proa hulls, modeled on the native boats used in the South Pacific for years. They have a high cat tunnel for seaworthiness, stability and a dry ride. And one hull is 35 percent thinner than the other to reduce drag. Over the years, Aspens have been praised (by me, among many, many others) for their smooth ride and efficient performance.
Aspens are made in Burlington, Washington.
