Mercury Marine just introduced a new line of diesel engines to boost mid-range performance. Developed and tested over the past three years, the new 3.0 liter Mercs come in 150-hp, 230-hp and 270-hp sizes. Mercury launched them at the big Sydney boat show in Australia.
The company says the new diesels will lead their class in acceleration, reliability, ease of installation and maintenance, and mitigation of noise and vibration. The new line complies with Tier 3 emissions standards, which are meant to reduce diesel engines’ impact on the environment.
“There is an active segment of the boating market that requires the impressive low-end torque and exceptional durability of our diesel engines,” said Kris Neff, Mercury’s VP of global strategic planning, “and these new engines enhance our already class-leading portfolio of diesel propulsion systems.”
The new diesels are compatible with Merc’s SmartCraft technologies, giving owners immediate information about engine performance, maintenance and troubleshooting. They also integrate with Mercury’s Joystick Piloting for Inboards (JPI), and Joystick Piloting for Sterndrives (JPS), giving owners fingertip control for low-speed maneuvering and docking.
The engines use a new water-cooled, variable-geometry turbocharger and common-rail fuel delivery system for improvements in acceleration and top speeds. They will be on display in the U.S. at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show starting Oct. 31. For more:
