Eye-Catching, But Still Traditional, Ellis 28 Just Launched

It doesn’t get much more traditional and Down East than this – an Ellis 28 “lobsteryacht” just launched in the company’s family-owned yard in Southwest Harbor, Maine. I’m pretty sure that it never crossed Don Ellis’ mind that he’d be building a red-hulled boat when he took over the Bunker and Ellis yard in the early ‘80s. He’s launched 300 boats since then, with the 28 as the most popular. (The Ellis line goes from 20 to 36 feet, and Ellis’ two sons are now running things.) Ellis started out with traditional lobster boats and then turned to fishing and…

New ICOM Handheld VHF Floats, Flashes and Has GPS and DSC

It seems that the new ICOM M93D handheld VHF radio does just about everything but drive the boat for you. It has an integrated GPS to tell you where you are and where you’re heading, built-in DSC so you can check in with other boats (or sound a distress), a special feature that sounds a buzz while it drains water away from the speaker, and a red LED light that turns on automatically (even if the radio is off) if you drop it in the water. And if floats. By the way, it’s also a state-of-the-art VHF. Slender and easy…

Video: Tipsy Captain Hits Palm Beach, Now Sues Town

This is hard to believe. You may remember that the captain of the 72-foot Time Out missed the inlet and ran his boat into the beach at Palm Beach at 2 a.m. after he said he had consumed a few Long Island iced teas last month. At the time, the  police charged him with boating under the influence. Now he’s suing the city, saying he was prevented from protecting his boat after the accident. Welcome – Again

. We had so much fun the first time we decided to do it again. And again and again. Welcome to the second edition of Cruising Odyssey, our new, dynamic, free weekly e-newsletter and constantly updated website. The overwhelming reaction to our launch last week has been heart-warming; it seems that a lot of you share our idea of Living the Dream Under Power. So here we are again, as we plan to be every week for a long time to come. . Our launch of Cruising Odyssey, it seems, hit the right nerve at the right time. Indeed, many…

Fort Lauderdale Show: 1,500 New Boats Worth $4 Billion!

All across the United States, indeed, all around the world, there are boat shows and there are boat shows. Shows for big boats, shows for small boats, shows for regional boats and shows for different kinds of boats. But nowhere, to my mind, can you find a better show, in a better place, and with more boats (from 15-foot runabouts to 250-foot megayachts) than at the 57th annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, which runs from Thursday, Nov. 3 through Monday, Nov. 7. The Lauderdale show (or FLIBS, as it’s called in the industry) is centered, as always, around the…

Monhegan: An Iconic Art-Colony Island in Maine

If you haven’t been to Monhegan Island, about 12 miles off the tip of Port Clyde in mid-coast Maine, go. Well, wait for summer, and then go. This is laid-back Maine at its best, a summer art colony with a terrific hotel overlooking the harbor and walking trails that don’t end. There are  no cars, and about 75 people live there year-round.  Picture an iconic Maine waterfront scene in your mind and you’ll find it on Monhegan. There is no marina (it’s not that kind of place). Instead, you hail the “harbormaster” when you arrive and he’ll come out in…

Fountaine-Pajot 37: Lots of Room, Lots of Performance

You really don’t appreciate how much room there is in the new Fountaine Pajot 37 power cat until you climb aboard. There’s space everywhere – in the clean, wide cockpit, the spacious flying bridge, the super-sized salon, the three cabins below and even more on the bow. When I was on the boat at a recent show, I looked around and counted nine other people there, with room to spare. Not bad for a 37-foot cruising boat. But extra space is only one of the advantages of this latest entry from a highly respected French builder. Performance is another. With…

Marlow 53E: New High-Tech, Long-Range Cruiser

The Lauderdale show is the first display of the new Marlow 53 Explorer, a fuel-efficient, long-range, state-of-the-art cruiser. For long or short trips, the new Marlow offers the same elegance, comfort and sophisticated engineering as its siblings. David Marlow uses aviation-like standards in the yachts bearing his name, with lots of Kevlar, carbon fiber and modified epoxy, while keeping both the overhead height and the center of gravity low. The new 53 tracks straight with Marlow’s exclusive Strut Keel. The engine room has standing headroom and walkaround access to the twin John Deere diesels. The boat’s salon has a desk…
