Idyll Time, a Kadey-Krogen 48, Explores Meyers Chuck, Alaska, One of the Most Remote, and Beautiful, Spots on the Inside Passage

Jeff and Susie Parker have come a long way from their home port in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on Idyll Time, their 2006 Kadey-Krogen 48 North Sea Trawler. When we visited them last year, they had transported the boat to the Pacific Northwest. In May, they picked it up after some winter’s work in Sydney, British Columbia, and headed north. Now they’ve just left Meyers Chuck, a large protected cove on the Inside Passage above Ketchikan, Alaska. I’ve been there a few times, and it’s one of the most beautiful and intriguing spots in that part of the world. The only way…

Living the Dream: Mystic Moon Cruises Up to Glacier Bay, Alaska

John and Kathy Youngblood have just left Glacier Bay, one of the most beautiful spots in the world, on their 2004 Selene 53 Mystic Moon. The picture above shows Kathy in front of Reid Glacier, one of the 50 named glaciers there; it’s 11 miles long. The Youngbloods have cruised some 35,000 nm on Mystic Moon in the Caribbean and the Pacific, so they’re not easily impressed by the works of nature. But when they were leaving Glacier Bay a few days ago they quoted one of their friends who talked about “such beauty so close to home.” They wrote on…

The Leopolds Cruise Their Ranger Tug 27 Up the Inside Passage  to Alaska, All Three of Them (and Moxie) By Peter A. Janssen When Mark and Peggy Leopold drove a trailer with their 27-foot Ranger Tug out of their driveway in Anacortes, Washington, on June 2, heading for the launch ramp to start their 3,000 nm round-trip to Juneau, Alaska, they left the davit crane that they usually use to lift their daughter Nicole on board behind. Instead, given the uncertainty of docks they would be encountering along the way, they brought a two-person sling, with secure straps, to carry…

Time to Rethink Your Dink: Get Up Close and Personal to Bears, Whales and Icebergs with a Good, Fast RIB

Here’s a great story that might make you think again about your dinghy. It can be much more than simply a means of getting ashore for provisions or dinner once you’ve dropped the hook after a long day of cruising. Instead, think of it as a vehicle for exploring places you’d never take your big boat, for poking around coves and inlets and shallows without worrying about getting stuck or running aground. A good, fast dinghy, according to these three authors, opens up a sense of adventure; it gets you closer to the environment, not to mention, bears, whales and…

Rare, Close-up Pictures of 20 Humpback Whales in Alaska

Here’s a rare treat – some great, close-up pictures of about 20 humpback whales near Hoonah, Alaska, which is west of Juneau and south of Glacier Bay. They were taken by Laura Domela, whose day job is a photographer in Portland, Oregon, but who also cruises on Airship, a Nordic Tug 34, that she runs with her husband, Kevin Morris. They lead the annual Slowboat flotilla from the San Juans up to Sitka. To my mind, much of the appeal of cruising in that part of the world is the random, sudden encounter with whales – and eagles and bears,…

Cruise to Alaska, Then Cross the Pacific, with the Bradshaws on Their Nordhavn 52

Phillip and Gerri Bradshaw from Fremantle, Australia, bought their Nordhavn 52, Mermaid Explorer, at Dana Point, California, two years ago, and they haven’t stopped cruising since then. First they headed down to Mexico, then up to Alaska, all the way to Glacier Bay, meeting other cruising couples and locals along the way. (One Alaska cruising tip: don’t miss Rose’s Bar, a local watering hole, in Pelican). Then the Bradshaws cruised back down to San Francisco and, after much thought, decided to cross the Pacific, just the two of them. It took 14 days to reach Hawaii, and Gerri says…

30 Nordhavns in Alaska: Great Video

In the largest owners’ rendezvous in the company’s history, 32 Nordhavns cruised to Petersburg, Alaska, this summer, surpassing the Nordhavn Atlantic Rally, with 17 boats, in 2004, and anything since. In addition to the owners who arrived on their own boats, many other Nordhavn owners flew in for the event. Here’s a great video showing how proud these owners are of their boats, and of their own cruising accomplishments. .https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vx0EiNf5wQ&feature=em-upload_owner
