One American Killed, Several Others Seriously Injured, in Boat Explosion in the Bahamas

A tragic explosion and boat fire about 130 miles south of Nassau in the Bahamas left one American woman dead and nine others injured. The Royal Bahamas Police Force said one of the two outboard engines on the 40-foot tourist boat exploded, engulfing the boat in flames. The boat was carrying ten Americans and two Bahamians. The boat was off Barraterre Island in the Exuma Cays at the time. At least three people from a nearby boat jumped into the water to help; they were able to pull one person to safety. The explosion occurred after 9 in the morning.…

Larry Polster Finally Takes His New Kadey-Krogen 50 Cruising in the Bahamas: “Damn, We Nailed This” By Peter A. Janssen For Larry Polster, a vice president and partner of Kadey-Krogen Yachts, this cruise has been a long time coming. Indeed, it started more than two years ago when Polster put in his order for hull number one of the new Kadey-Krogen 50 Open series; he wanted it for his personal boat so he and his wife Janet could go cruising again. The Polsters were intimately involved in every aspect of the new build, inspecting it in the factory in Taiwan,…

Boating Boom in the Bahamas, with “Excellent” Prospects for the Rest of the Year

There’s a boating boom in the Bahamas, at least there was for the first quarter of this year, when arrivals at marinas there were up a whopping 60 percent over the same time last year. And marina operators throughout the island chain are predicting that the boom will continue. “The prospects for boating to the Bahamas look excellent for 2018,” Stephen Kappeler, president of the Association of Bahamas Marinas, told the newspaper Tribune 242. Marina operators say there are several reasons for the boom. Boat sales are up and former boat owners have received settlements for boats lost in last…

Cruising the Bahamas on Bumfuzzle: The Schulte Family Stays on the Move By Peter A. Janssen Pat Schulte says that he and his wife Ali are “not ones to settle down.” That’s a considerable understatement. In fact, ever since they quit their jobs in Chicago in 2003, they’ve been on the move, sailing around the world, driving from Alaska to Argentina, and now cruising the Bahamas on their 1986 Grand Banks 42 Bumfuzzle with their two children. And loving every minute of it. While he was still in college in Chicago, Schulte started working in the commodities pit as trader.…

Heading for the Miami Show? Take a Weekend in Bimini

If you’re heading to the Miami show, or just cruising in Florida, you may want to think about taking a 50-mile side trip (with your passport) over to Bimini. Even at 15 knots, you could leave Miami after breakfast and be sitting down for conch chowder at the Big Game Club (founded in 1936 and a Hemingway hangout) for lunch. Or dive, or explore Alice Town (that will be fun but it won’t take long), or fish, or just relax. For me, Bimini has been a favorite for a fast change of scene, and drop of blood pressure, for many,…

Canadian Couple Completes Great Loop, Tells All in New Book

You can’t say that Carole Duval and Michel Mailloux aren’t adventuresome. Indeed, the couple from Brossard, Quebec, near Montreal, recently completed more than 6,100 nm on the Great Loop and the Bahamas on their 1990 Carver 41, named Emotion III. During those 13 months, they ran through just about every kind of experience – and emotion – you’d expect on such a long cruise, including getting stuck for three days on a dredged inlet in the Suwannee River near the Gulf of Mexico (see picture above). When they got home, Duval wrote a book about their trip, appropriately called “The…

Not that you should need them, but if you’re looking for more reasons to charter a bareboat powerboat in the Abacos, here goes. And these are in addition to the reasons that I personally love cruising there  – some of the most beautiful water in the world, great white beaches, terrific marinas and resorts, and the chance to get away from it all. And they’re nearby. http://www.moorings.com/blog/five-experiences-you-can-only-have-bahamas
