Coast Guard Pulls Up Buoy with 20 Bullet Holes Off Block Island

This is just too weird. During a routine maintenance run, the Coast Guard pulled up a sunken buoy off Block Island, Rhode Island, and found that it had 20 bullet holes in it. The Clay Head buoy number 7 marks a large rock three feet under the surface. Crewmen from the Coast Guard cutter Ida Lewis  were conducting regular aids to navigation maintenance when they pulled up the buoy. It was the second buoy discovered with bullet holes in the past week, the Coast Guard said. “While it may be fun to use a buoy for target practice, it is…

Coast Guard Commandant’s Reading List: Smart and Informed

You don’t get to be Commandant of the United States Coast Guard by being a dummy. And Admiral Paul Zukunft, the current Commandant, is certainly no exception, as exemplified by the reading list he published on All Hands, the Coast Guard’s official blog. The ten authors on the Commandant’s list range from Tom Friedman to Sebastian Junger; two great writers who come to their expertise through widely different experiences. I’d read anything by either of them. Then there’s Richard Haas, one of the smartest, and most fair-minded, thinkers around. You could do a lot worse than spending your time reading…

Coast Guard Icebreakers Start Clearing the Great Lakes

So you think it’s cold where you are? Take a look at the ice beard on the crane on the Coast Guard Cutter Alder, above. And that’s before the 225-foot Alder and other Coast Guard vessels start their annual ice-breaking duties on the Great Lakes. They’re starting on northern Lake Superior and Lake Michigan, and then will move south (relatively speaking) as winter sets in. The Coast Guard urges recreational boaters to use caution in the area. See the story, and more  pictures, here: http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2016/12/coast_guard_begins_ice_breakin.html

Incredible New Video of Coast Guard Surf Training: You Don’t Want To Be There

You’ve got to see this. You think you’ve been in heavy seas? Or that you’re properly salty? Well, you may want to think again. Here’s a Coast Guard video of their heavy weather surf training off the Oregon and Washington coasts on their 47-foot Motor Life Boat. It’s certainly good to know that these men and woman are going to be well-trained if you ever need them, but wow, this isn’t easy. Take a look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7Evav3KlMA&feature=em-subs_digest

Boat Starts to Sink; Coast Guard Rescues Three Men, Two Dogs

I’m partial, but I’ve always got to hand it to the Coast Guard for being there when you need them. Latest example: When the Coast Guard near New Orleans got a call that a powerboat was sinking off Dauphin Island, Alabama, they launched a 45-foot fast response boat and two helicopters. The rescue boat got there first and plucked three men and two dogs from the water. If you look the picture, I think you’d agree that the Coast Guard got there just in time. http://coastguardnews.com/coast-guard-rescues-3-people-2-dogs/2016/10/12/

What You Don’t Know About the Coast Guard

Here are some fun facts about the Coast Guard. I’ve worked with some of these men and women over the years and they do a terrific job; the real point is that they’re there when you need them most. Do you really want to try to be a rescue swimmer, or drive a rollover boat in breaking surf, or fly a helicopter during a storm at night to try to rescue someone who’s hurt miles offshore? These people all have great training for a very serious job. https://www.uso.org/stories/1708-26-things-you-should-know-about-the-coast-guard-for-its-226th-birthday

Incredible Coast Guard Rescue in Alaska

This is one of the best Coast Guard rescue videos ever. It’s all in a day’s work for these people, but here a Coast Guard helicopter crew put their own swimmer the water in Alaska to hoist four fishermen to safety as their boat sinks behind them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S12DrHyQXUg
