NASA: Moon Wobble Will Cause Higher Tides

A new study by NASA says that the moon’s wobble, combined with rising sea levels, will cause frequent and devastating high tides and flooding by the mid-2030s. The moon’s wobble, first reported in 1728, is a regular oscillation in the moon’s 18.6-year cycle. But NASA says, “What’s new is how one of the wobble’s effects on the moon’s gravitational pull – the main cause of earth’s tides – will combine with rising sea levels resulting from the planet’s warming.” The “wobble” is reached at certain points in the moon’s cycle when the gravitational pull is at such an angle that…

“It’s Terrifying:” Boaters Stranded by High Water on Lake Ontario

By Kamil KaramaliReporter  Global News Ron Kirton hops off his boat onto what is usually a dry dock at Bluffers Park Yacht Club — but this year, the entire wooden structure has been submerged completely under water because of high water levels in Lake Ontario. “It’s been a long frustrating year for a lot of people,” said Kirton, while ankle-deep in water with his pant legs rolled up. “Everyone pays a lot of money down here.” “We launched in April and 90 per cent of the boats haven’t even been started.” Kirton said almost all of the club members at…

NOAA: Huge Dead Zone Coming in Gulf of Mexico. Mississippi Flooding Stalls Barge Traffic

NOAA just predicted that a large dead zone, about the size of Massachusetts, will develop in the Gulf of Mexico this summer as a result of record rains and flooding in the Midwest. Meanwhile, flooding and fast currents have stalled most of the barge traffic on the Mississippi, with almost 300 barges waiting out the weather at two locks there. NOAA says the dead zone, an area where low or no oxygen can kill fish and other marine life, will be caused by nutrient pollution flowing down the Mississippi. Once the excess nutrients reach the Gulf, they will stimulate the…

Will the Missouri River Just Keep on Flooding? And What Can We Do About It?

If you do the Great Loop counterclockwise, like most people, you’ll go down the Illinois River from Chicago to the Mississippi; I did this in three very easy days a few years ago on a Beneteau 34 Swift Trawler, and entering the Mississippi was breathtaking. The Mississippi at that point is simply awesome in its breadth and power. But then, about 20 miles or so downstream, the Missouri flows into the Mississippi on the west side, and the Mississippi simply gains in strength and majesty. It is indeed the Mighty Mississippi, carrying the strength and energy of the heartland all…

Some Coastal Flooding To Become Weekly Event: NOAA Study

A new study from NOAA says that flooding may become a weekly event in some coastal areas of the U.S. Even without a storm, high tides are already flooding some coastal cities, including Miami and Norfolk, Virginia. And the NOAA study says that “sunny day flooding” will be more frequent in the future as ever-more-frequent storms make the problem worse. What is now a storm surge will be a normal high tide in the future. “The numbers are staggering,” says William Sweet, a NOAA oceanographer. “Today’s storm will be tomorrow’s high tide.” As reported by NPR, the NOAA report says…
