Last Seen Off Cape Cod, Salty the Great White Shark Now Swims with Divers Off Jupiter, Florida

Salty, a great white shark, gets around. He was tagged swimming off Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in August, 2012. Now he’s been photographed swimming with some freedivers off Jupiter, Florida, where he was identified by shark experts who saw his picture on the internet. Salty was last seen by a group of friends who were spearing fish in about 60 feet of water off Jupiter. They were diving off a local wreck, and one of them had just speared a cobia. The shark wasn’t particularly interested in the cobia or the divers, they said. It was just swimming big loops around…

Divers Swim With Enormous Great White Shark, Perhaps Largest Ever (and Pregnant), Off Hawaii

Ocean Ramsey, a shark researcher, found herself diving next to an enormous great white shark recently off Oahu, Hawaii, recently. She thinks it may have been Deep Blue, at 20 feet long and 8 feet wide the largest great white ever recorded; she once swam with Deep Blue off Guadalupe Island, Mexico. Ramsey came across the shark while it was feeding on the carcass of a sperm whale about 15 miles offshore. NOAA had towed the carcass there because it had been attracting smaller sharks near the beach where it died. Ramsey said that tiger sharks were feeding on the…

More Sharks, and More Shark Attacks, in California. Now the State Is Trying To Figure Out What To Do

Last summer there were so many sharks along the California coast that the NBC station in Los Angeles called it the “summer of sightings.” Boaters, kayakers, surfers, divers and swimmers all reported seeing more sharks, including great white sharks, than ever before. And this year there are more than ever, so many, in fact, that the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach, the leading great white shark research organization, has run out of tags to identify them. The historic trend is stark: In the 1950s, there were 12 shark attacks in California waters. So far in the 2010s,…

Great White Sharks Return to Cape Cod: Say Hello to Turbo, James and Jack

James is back; so is Jack. And so are a lot of their relatives and friends. So many great white sharks are swimming around Cape Cod that researchers have given them names. Turbo, pictured above, was spotted off Wellfleet. Sandy and Omar were both seen off Chatham. James and Jack were first seen off the Cape a year ago and are making a return visit this summer. All told, the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy reports sightings of more than a dozen great whites at the start of the summer around Cape Cod. Five were reported on the first Monday of…

Fisherman Hooks 3,000-pound, 16-foot Great White Shark Off Hilton Head. “Holy ….!” See the Video

Chip Michalove, a charter fishing captain from Hilton Head, South Carolina, went out looking for great white sharks recently. He found more than he bargained for. At first, Michalove hooked a 10-foot great white, but it got away. He was going to call it a day, when he saw a giant 16-foot, 3,0000-pound great white swimming under his boat. With only one other person on board (two of his regular crewmen had taken the day off), Michalove called a nearby boat for help. The reinforced crew hooked the great white and brought it near the boat, as you can see…

Great White Shark “Freaks Out” Family of 7 on Holiday Fishing Trip. See Video

A 16-foot great white shark circled a family of seven on a holiday fishing trip in South Australia for 20 minutes before they headed back to shore. “The girth of the shark just freaked us out as much as the length,” Jodie Brown, the mother of the family told the Adelaide Advertiser. The family was on a 19-foot boat, and Mrs. Brown said the shark was easily as wide as the boat. Mrs. Brown and her children were visiting her family over the Christmas holidays when they decided to go fishing off Port Victoria, near Adelaide. They caught some fish,…
