More Atlantic Hurricanes than Usual This Year, Says Colorado State Forecast

Last year was the worst hurricane season ever on the Atlantic Coast of the U.S. This year, according to the well-regarded annual forecast from Colorado State, there will be more hurricanes than average, with a chance that seven named storms will turn into hurricanes. And there’s a 63 percent chance the U.S. will be hit by a major hurricane. No one wants a repeat of last year, when Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria caused more than $217 billion worth of damage, the most ever. The Colorado State study, now in its 35th year, predicts that the Atlantic coast will have…

NOAA: Extremely Active Hurricane Season Ends. See Chilling Four-Minute Video

The 2017 hurricane season is now officially over, and we have to say good riddance. Unfortunately, it matched NOAA’s predictions for being extremely active, with 17 named storms, including ten that became hurricanes. And six of those were major hurricanes, including the first two to hit the continental U.S. in the past 12 years. By NOAA’s records, 2017 was the seventh most active season going back to 1851, and the most active season since 2005. “This was a hurricane season that wouldn’t quit,” said retired Navy Rear Admiral Timothy Galladuet, acting NOAA Administrator. Three major hurricanes made landfall this year:…

The Storms Moved On, but for Some of the Caribbean, So Did the Jobs

How long will it be before the boating and tourism industry returns to the hardest-hit islands in the Caribbean after Hurricanes Irma and Maria blew through, destroying hotels, marinas, charter fleets and houses? No one knows, particularly the people who live and work there.  But they do know that they don’t have a way to make a living. The New York Times reports that residents are leaving St. Martin, “because their jobs are no more.” “Right now, the livelihood of tourism is in a coma,” said the sales manager of a luxury hotel in Anguilla. A waitress at a hotel in…

Irma Causes Massive Boat Damage in Caribbean, Now Heading for Bahamas and Florida

The before and after picture above, showing Paraquita Bay in Tortola, British Virgin Islands, where many charter companies tried to secure their boats, says it all.  The damage, where Hurricane Irma hit directly, is catastrophic. The hurricane, the strongest Atlantic storm ever, is now moving toward the low-lying Turks & Caicos at 17 mph with sustained 180-mph winds; NOAA predicts it will then head for the Bahamas and south Florida. By the time it hits Florida its path will be 120 miles – covering the entire width of the state, plus some. Irma originally made landfall on the tiny…

NOAA Updates Atlantic Hurricane Forecast: Now Potential To Be “Extremely Active”

NOAA has just updated its forecast for the Atlantic hurricane season, and it will be worse than they had thought just a few months ago. Indeed, NOAA says we now face a higher likelihood of an above-normal season, with the potential for it to be extremely active – the worst since 2010. The new, harsher forecast says there is a 60 percent chance of an above-normal season, with 14 to 19 named storms; 5 to 9 hurricanes, and 2 to 5 major hurricanes. Gerry Bell, the lead forecaster at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, says, “The wind and air patterns in…

Weather Experts: Possibly More Hurricanes on East Coast This Season

How bad will it be? What remains for the hurricane season this year? We already have three named storms, an unusually high number since it’s not even the end of June yet. And a new consensus from six major weather centers, from NOAA to AccuWeather, suggest the hurricane season will either be normal or just above normal for the remainder of the year. For named storms affecting the east coast of the U.S., the predictions range from a low of 10 to a high of 17. For hurricanes, the range is from six to 10; for major hurricanes, the range…

Prepare for a Hurricane: Great Advice from the Coast Guard

Hurricane season has just started, running from June 1 through Nov. 30, so it’s definitely time to prepare before one heads your way. This season is likely to be lively: NOAA is predicting 11 to 17 named tropical storms this year due to much warmer waters along the Atlantic coast. What to do now? Here’s a very thorough list from the Coast Guard that pretty much covers everything, from how to inspect your boat, get the right gear, tie up or anchor out, find a hurricane hole, secure the engines, and even recover your boat once the hurricane has passed…

AccuWeather: Fewer Atlantic Hurricanes This Season, But At Least One Killer

The good news is that AccuWeather is predicting fewer Atlantic hurricanes than usual for this season. The bad news is that there still will be three bad ones – and one really deadly one. AccuWeather reports that warming temperatures in the Pacific will send strong westerlies to tropical areas of the Atlantic that will slow the development of hurricanes. Still, the hurricane season, from June 1 through Nov. 30, will see ten named storms – five less than last year – threatening the East Coast. Three of those five will be major hurricanes. And at least one will be a…
