We Test the New, Prize-Winning Back Cove 34O: A Fast, Fun and Game-Changing Couple’s Cruiser By Peter A. Janssen I nailed it. As I jammed the throttles all the way forward, I realized this isn’t your father’s Back Cove. Actually, it isn’t like any other Back Cove ever, and I’ve driven every new model since Back Cove introduced its first one, a 29, in 2003. Back then, Sabre Yachts created Back Cove as a single-diesel, low-maintenance, user-friendly Down East cruising boat. But now, on this brand-new Back Cove 34O, all that was ancient history. Powered by twin 300-hp Yamaha outboards,…

Powered by twin 300-hp Yamaha outboards, the Back Cove simply took off. As the props dug in, there was a bit of bow rise and…

Jeanneau Launches New 35-Foot Cruising Boat With Twin 300-hp Yamahas

Jeanneau has just launched its new 35-foot outboard-powered NC 1095 cruising boat, the flagship of its NC (New Concept) fleet. The new 38-knot cruiser will make its U.S. debut at the Annapolis powerboat show, starting Oct. 11. The new cruiser from the prestigious French builder is powered by twin 300-hp Yamaha F300 four-stroke outboards. It cruises at about 25 knots, and is remarkably fuel efficient, burning about 1 nmpg at that speed. It is available in a two- or three-stateroom arrangement, with additional sleeping space for two in the convertible dinette area in the salon. The cockpit and salon are…

Aspen Power Cats Working on Two New Cruisers with Outboard Power, but Same Proa Hulls By Peter A. Janssen Aspen Power Catamarans is working on two new outboard-powered cruising boats, a first for the company, but they still will have Larry Graf’s innovative asymmetrical proa hulls. They also will be Aspen’s first twin-engine cruisers, and they join a growing trend to outboard power for cruising boats up to the 50-foot range. The new Aspens will start with a 3070 and a 3480 (pictured above). The 3070 will have a 200-hp outboard on the cat’s larger starboard hull providing the main…

Maine Builder Back Cove Planning Its First Outboard-Powered Boat, a 34O, with Twin 300-hp Yamahas By Peter A. Janssen There’s big news this week from Back Cove, the Maine company that’s been building single-engine, diesel-powered cruising boats since 2003: It is now working on the Back Cove 34O, and the O stands for outboard power, as in two 300-hp Yamahas. The boat will be ready for sea trials in August and will make an appearance at the fall shows. This is a big change for Back Cove, which is part of Sabre, and an acknowledgement that the market, even for…

New Great Harbour TT35: An Outboard-Powered Trawler that You Can Trailer Anywhere

The new Great Harbour TT35, which will be launched at the Annapolis powerboat show starting Oct. 12, combines two growing trends: Outboard power, and trailerability. It’s designed to pack in all the comforts of a single-stateroom, liveaboard trawler with the ease, efficiency and cost-effectiveness of an outboard-powered boat that can be launched and retrieved and then trailered to cruising grounds all around the U.S. and Canada. The new Great Harbour has home-like amenities, including a queen island berth in the master stateroom, a full-featured galley and a large head with a separate shower. The salon can hold extra guests for…

Endeavour TrawlerCat 42: Tons of Space and Outboard Power

Many smaller cruising boats, monohulls and cats, are moving to outboard power, and the Endeavour TrawlerCat 42 is a larger example of that trend. Using the same hull and layout as the Endeavour 40, the new 42 is powered by twin 300-hp Suzuki outboards that produce a top speed of 21.3 mph, while making the boat even more user-friendly in skinny water spots of the Chesapeake and the Bahamas with its 3-foot draft. You could even trim the outboards up if you need to. The appeal of the new Endeavour, in addition to its outboard power, is the tremendous amount…
