Record Waves – Up to 46 Feet – Hit Western Med

Storm Gloria caused a series of record-breaking waves recently in the western Mediterranean Sea. Indeed, a buoy off the Balearic Islands recorded a new record wave height of 46.58 feet, while buoys off Valencia, Spain, registered a significant wave height of 27.69 feet, the largest ever recorded in the Med. Significant wave height is the equivalent of the mean wave height of the highest third of the waves at a given time. It is what an experienced observer would estimate at sea at that time. Record-Breaking 74.4-Foot Wave Hits California Coast

A monster record-setting wave was recorded during a “bomb cyclone” less than 20 miles off the northern California coast last month, according to scientists at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. At 74.4 feet high, it was the largest wave ever recorded by Scripps’ network of coastal buoys. The wave was measured at a buoy off Cape Mendocino, in more than 1,000 feet of water. What was unusual was not only the size of this single wave, but also the size of average waves at the time. Scripps’ buoys measure average wave height every 30 minutes. The 74.4 wave came during…

Her series, called Sirens (inspired by Homer’s Odyssey), is shortlisted for the Sony World Photography Award; it also will be exhibited at the Sohn Fine Art Gallery in Lenox, Massachusetts, in September. Talibart grew up sailing with her father in the English Channel. The problem was that she got seasick. Her cure was to sit in the cockpit and stare out at the…
