New Legacy 42 IPS: A Classic Mark Ellis Design with State-of-the-Art Performance

The Legacy 42 IPS is a classic Down East cruiser with two cabins and one head and a traditional look that will never go out of style. Legacy originally introduced the 42, designed by Mark Ellis, about ten years ago; now, under new ownership by Tartan Yachts in Ohio, Legacy is reintroducing it with Volvo’s pod drives, a proven hull shape, advanced composites and a luxurious interior.

The modified-V hull carries an 18-degree deadrise at the transom and has wide chines for stability. Driven by twin Volvo 400 IPS engines (310-hp), the 42 cruises at 28 knots, burning about 19 gph, with a range of 601 nm. It tops out at more than 29 knots. With its joystick controls, Volvo’s IPS pod drive system makes maneuvering around a dock fingertip-easy, and the IPS system provides greater fuel efficiency and a quieter operation than traditional shaft drives.

The 42’s salon is straightforward, with an entertainment center and barrel chair to port and a settee to starboard. The helm console and nav table are in varnished cherry; Tartan specializes in handcrafted cherry interiors, with raised paneled cherry doors, dovetailed drawers and solid-stock Sapelle soles. The steering wheel is stainless steel with teak trim. A side door leads from the helm station to the starboard side deck, to make docking and line-handling easy.

Below, an owner has four choices of interiors, but the basic boat has the master stateroom forward with an island double berth, drawers below and storage underneath. There are two cedar-lined hanging lockers and tongue-and-groove, cherry-planked hull ceilings. The master head has a separate shower, with a seat in the shower stall. The guest cabin has a single berth that converts to a double. A combined breakfast bar/work station is next to the galley, with a two-seat breakfast bar and cushioned bench. (The galley also can be up, if the owner so desires.)

The hull and deck of the 42 are laid up with vacuum-infused modified epoxy resins and high-tech composites. Legacy offers a transferrable 15-year structural hull and blister warranty.
