True North Yachts just announced that its building a new 39 Outboard Express that will be launched this summer.

The new 39 is being built in the Catalina factory in Largo, Florida. Catalina has built more than 80,000 sailboats over the past half century. It bought True North five years ago, and is now focused on expanding its market. True North already has a 34-foot outboard boat.

The 39 has some of the Down East lines that date to the original True North 38, launched by the Pearson Marine Group in 2001 in Warren, Rhode Island. The first True Norths were billed as the SUVs of the water, since they were versatile boats that could adapt to fishing, diving, cruising or entertaining; whatever the owner wanted. The company changed ownership a few times over the years.

With its plumb bow, reverse transom, all-weather pilothouse and large open cockpit, the new 39 is still made for a variety of uses. It has a berth in the forward cabin below that can sleep two adults, plus a private head and shower

A two-person seat faces the helm on the starboard of the salon; the cruising galley is just aft. A large U-shaped settee and table are on the port side. In the cockpit, an L-shaped settee is against the transom on the port side, and an aft-facing seat is against the bulwark forward. A transom door opens to the swim platform and the outboards on the starboard side.

Standard power comes from three 400-hp outboards. Other engine packages are options; so are a Seakeeper gyro stabilizer, bow thruster, and fingertip joystick controls.

The True North’s bridge clearance is just 11 feet, so it should be able to slide under a lot of bridges in Florida or the Great Loop.

Specs.: LOA: 44’; Beam: 13’6”; Draft: 3’6”; Disp.: 20,000 lbs.; Fuel: 400 gals.; Water: 100 gals.; Power: 3×400-hp outboards.
