New Nimbus 405 Flybridge: A Stylish, Sophisticated, Swedish Cruiser with Volvo Performance

The new Nimbus 405 Flybridge is the latest iteration of the popular and prize-winning Nimbus 405 Coupe, adding space, an additional helm station and lots of entertaining room to the three-stateroom, two-head, Swedish-built, all-weather cruiser. The 405 Coupe was a hit when it was introduced three years ago, winning a Best of Boats Award and a nomination for European Powerboat of the Year.

Nimbus is relatively new in the U.S., and it’s represented by Essex Yacht Sales in Connecticut on the East Coast and by Seattle Yachts on the West Coast. But the brand is well-established in Europe; it started in Sweden in the late 1960s and has sold 4,000 boats since then. The 405 is the flagship of the Nimbus cruising fleet, which also has 305 and 365 models.

The 405 Flybridge is the epitome of modern Scandinavian cool, with clean, sleek lines inside and out. The salon feels sophisticated and is filled with natural light and straight lines; the flybridge is lush and inviting. And the boat’s performance, topping out at about 28 knots, driven by twin straight-shaft Volvo Penta diesels, fits into the comfortable cruising mode. A joystick for fingertip docking is an option; a bow thruster is standard,

An unusual, and appealing, feature of the new Nimbus is what the company calls a “sidewalk” along the starboard side, where the deck is extra wide for safe movement fore and aft. The salon is asymmetrical, offset to port, but it gains space overall without a traditional deck on the port side. And a large, flush sliding door next to the helm opens to the large starboard deck.

The salon is modern and open, with a U-shaped settee to port, surrounding a large table with an expandable forward section. A straight, standard galley is opposite. The ergonomic helm has seating for two; a companion bench on the port side also seats two. The windshield is wide, curved and uninterrupted. The forward panel on the sunroof overhead retracts for fresh air.

Below, each of the three cabins has two berths. The master forward has an oversized skylight-style hatch for extra light; it also has an en suite head with shower. The two guest staterooms share a head and shower. Reflecting its heritage, the Nimbus 405 has a locker for hanging wet foul weather gear in the hallway between the guest staterooms; it even has a drain.

You step aboard the boat from a swim platform that’s large enough to hold a tender. A built-in fender rack folds aft to open a storage area in the stern bulkhead of the cockpit. In the cockpit itself, a dining or cocktail table expands to serve eight; it also lowers electrically to form the base for a sun lounge.

Up top, the bridge has a twin helmseat, which can be turned 180 degrees to form a social area with a sofa. For entertaining or relaxing, there’s also a wet bar, sink, grill, fridge and sun bed.
