Couple Hurt in Jetty Crash Sue Driver for $100 Million

Here’s an update on a terrible crash into the Port Everglades Jetty last New Year’s Eve from the Sun-Sentinel: FORT LAUDERDALE — They celebrated her birthday with a late-night cruise through the Intracoastal Waterway on a powerboat dubbed Blue Steel. Nothing too daring or adventurous; they would be out for only a few short hours. They ended up bloodied and confused on a dark jetty near the end of the inlet at Port Everglades. Lauren Silagyi, who was celebrating her 33rd birthday on Dec. 30, fell onto the jagged rocks and ended up with a traumatic brain injury in the…

Coast Guard Report: Why Ferry Crashed Into Hyannis Breakwater

At 9:33 on a rainy night in June two years ago, the 154-foot-long Iyanough fast ferry from Nantucket ran headlong into the breakwater in Hyannisport, Massachusetts, at 30 knots, even though there were two officers with decades of experience on the bridge. In the crash, 15 people were injured, and a Coast Guard helicopter lifted them to shore. The other 42 people on board climbed down a ladder to the breakwater; the last one reached land at 3:30 a.m. How did the captain, Karl Riddar, and the pilot, Thomas Manley, miss the turn into Hyannis Harbor and the ferry terminal…

Wake Tosses Driver and Passengers Out of Boat in Southport, North Carolina; Out-of-Control Boat Crashes into Docks

Kevin Harrell, 51, from Wilmington, North Carolina, was heading south on the Cape Fear River in Southport about 6:30 on a June evening when his boat was hit by the wake of a larger northbound boat. Officials said Harrell’s boat went up and then the bow submerged, throwing Harrell and his three passengers into the water. Apparently Harrell hit the throttle as he was ejected from his boat, because it drove at full speed into three docks along the Southport waterfront before coming to rest on a beach. Boaters in the area who witnessed the accident pulled Harrell and his…

Another Boat Crashes onto Same Government Cut Jetty where Miami’s Jose Fernandez and Two Friends Died. See Video

Another boat has crashed at night into the same rock jetty in Government Cut where Miami Marlins star pitcher José Fernandez and two friends died two years ago. This time the three people on board were rescued by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue; one was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and the other two had scrapes and bruises. The boat hit the rocks, on the south side of the cut, the large, man-made channel separating Miami Beach from Fisher Island, about 9:15 at night. A fireboat arrived, and a rescue swimmer jumped into the water and got to the stranded…

Cargo Ships Loses Steering, Crashes into Historic Mansion on the Bosporus. See the Video

A 738-foot-long cargo carrier lost its rudder and crashed into a historic waterside mansion on the Bosporus Strait in Istanbul, Turkey, causing a great deal of damage and temporarily closing the Strait, one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. The 17-mile Bosporus connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara and then the Aegean and  the Mediterranean. The Maltese-flagged ship, the Vistaspirit, crashed into a red mansion that dates back to the 18th century; it once belonged to a doctor in the Ottoman palace but now is primarily used for events, such as weddings or concerts. The…

Jury Convicts Man Who Killed 8-Year-Old Girl in Lake George Boating Crash of Manslaughter

On a July evening last summer, Robert Knarr, 68, took his granddaughter, Charlotte McCue, 8, and her mother, Courtney, out for a pre-bedtime cruise on the west shore of Lake George, New York, on his antique 28-foot Gar Wood Enchanted Evening. The McCues were visiting from California. Suddenly a 21-foot Larson slammed into the starboard side of Enchanted Evening. The Larson was going so fast it went airborne. The prop hit Charlotte, killing her instantly, and seriously injuring her mother. The Larson stalled, but the driver restarted it and then sped away. The next morning, the driver of the Larson,…

Tragic Video: Two Dead as Cat Flips on Potomac Radar Run

This is just a tragic accident: A 36-foot cat flipped during a timed radar run on the Potomac River near Fairview Beach, Virginia. The driver and throttle man were both thrown from the boat and died. The cat had been timed at 170 mph earlier in the day. I personally how how boats travel right on the edge of control/disaster at these speeds, since I once drove a 47-foot Fountain cat 162 mph. At that speed a puff of wind, something in the water or an error in judgment can easily mean an upside down boat and catastrophe for the…
