More and more people are cruising the Great Loop after they retire. They’re looking for an adventure, the chance to do something new, to see new places, to meet new friends. The 6,000 mile circumnavigation of the eastern half of the United States, plus side trips to the Bahamas or up the east coast to Maine, add to the allure. The Loop is a dream, but it’s not an out-of-reach dream. It’s achievable.

Here’s a fun story from The Tennessean about Ron and Karen Atkisson, from Brentwood, Tennessee, south of Nashville. They ran a chain of automobile repair shops for 30 years before they retired in 2014. And they wanted to do the Great Loop.

They planned and saved and bought a Carver 43, and they left Clarksville Marina last October 30. The Atkissons just completed their dream, finishing the entire Loop plus some side trips.

And they repeated the running joke that couples who complete the Loop need three things: Weight Watchers, marriage counseling, and Alcoholics Anonymous. None of these applied to the Atkissons.

They loved the Loop. As Ron told the paper, “You don’t know what you might face, and the not knowing can be disturbing. And yet, when you tie that knot on the dock each day, you feel more alive than you ever did.” Read more:
