Remember that old prize-winning Rolling Stone ad campaign, perception vs. reality? The perception was that the Rolling Stone reader was a doped-out hippie who didn’t have a nickel to his name, while the reality, at least according to the ad campaign, was that the average reader was an up-and-coming entrepreneur who could easily afford that new BMW 5 Series convertible or that alluring American Airlines first-class flight to Paris that were displayed in four-color ad spreads throughout the magazine.

Now, the same is true of boats, at least according to this very funny piece in Business Insider. In this case, the juxtaposed pictures and captions tell it all. The perception vs. the reality of owning a yacht, the glitz and glimmer that often, in the real-world, turn into something else.

The problem here is that much of this has a ring of truth to it. Sure, the numbers are bigger here, in the megayacht examples, than they would be for most of us with slightly smaller cruising boats, but the basic themes are the same. I’m sure you’ll find some situations in boat ownership here that are all too familiar: the hidden expenses, the learning curve, unexpected repairs, yard problems, guest issues, etc. But the pictures here will make you smile.
