A 332-foot megayacht and a charter fishing boat collided at night in the Pacific south of San Diego. Several people were injured, one critically, and the fishing boat sustained major damage. The critically injured man died the next day.

The Coast Guard said there were 28 people on Prowler, a 65-foot fishing boat out of San Diego. It launched a Jayhawk helicopter, a 45-foot response boat and the Cutter Sea Otter to the scene, which was nine miles off Imperial Beach near the U.S.-Mexico border. The Jayhawk crew hoisted the critically injured person off the Prowler and flew him to a hospital in San Diego, where he died the next day. The fast response boat carried the the other injured people to shore.

The Coast Guard said the cause of the collision is under investigation.

The $250 million megayacht was the Attessa IV, owned by Dennis Washington, an 84-year-old billionaire. Forbes says he’s the 88th richest person in the U.S., with a net worth of $6 billion.

Washington bought the yacht in 2007 and engaged in a major refit, including installing a forward garage with gull-wing doors that open to launch two tenders, a 37-foot Novurania and a 33-foot Riva. The yacht also has a helipad, ten cabins, a movie theater, pool, gym and beauty salon. It can hold 36 guests and a 21-member crew.  For more:
