Hudson Powercat 48: A Stylish, Stable Cruiser with Lots of Light and Space

With lines from the famed British designer Bill Dixon, the new Hudson Powercat 48 is a stylish, stable and strong catamaran with large, luxurious spaces to make long-range cruising or just weekend entertaining easy and inviting. One notable feature: The full-beam master stateroom is on the main deck forward, filled with lots of light and space.

The Hudson 48 comes with three staterooms, all with en suite heads and showers, and three separate dining areas, offering a variety of shared and private spaces on board. Owners can choose to cover the flybridge with a Bimini or a hardtop or even to make it fully enclosed. With 660 gallons of fuel, the cat has a range of 1,300 nm at 8.8 knots. Powered by twin 370-hp Yanmar diesels, it tops out at just over 21 knots.

Hudson Powercat is part of the Hudson Yacht Group, founded in 2006 by Hudson Wang, an entrepreneur who was making a lot of sports equipment (including baseball bats) for the world market. He had a passion for sailing, and formed a relationship with Bill Dixon and then with leading brands, including J/Boats, Gunboat and Pearl. In 2010 he started Hudson Powercat as his own brand of multihull powerboats, and two years later he started HH Catamarans as his own brand of luxury performance sailing multihulls; they have won many awards since then. The boats are made at a large factory in Xiamen, China, with 400 employees.

The 48 is the smallest Hudson Powercat; there also is a 52 and a 56. With its contemporary, flowing lines and wraparound windshield, the 48 should turn heads in any harbor. You can walk on via the teak swim platforms on both sides and through transom gates into the massive cockpit/aft deck. It has a teak deck and a U-shaped settee and teak table on two stainless steel pedestals for outdoor lounging or dining. The area is protected by the overhang from the flybridge, and there’s a hot and cold shower in the transom.

Then you can walk into the salon through three glass doors that open wide to make one very large social area, all on the same level (see the picture above). The galley is aft on the port side; it has easy access to the aft deck and to the dining area on the starboard side of the salon, which also has a teak table and large settee. Forward, to port, is another settee with a 40-inch TV that can be raised or lowered. The optional lower helm is to starboard.

Up top, the flybridge is another social and dining area; when it’s folded out, the dining table can serve 12. A large sunbed with backrests is on the port side forward, opposite the upper helm to starboard. Visibility from the helm is a full 360 degrees. An outdoor galley with a grill, sink and ice maker are to starboard. On the foredeck, a large  U-shaped settee offers great views underway, or a private social and sunning area at any time.

The master stateroom on the salon level is exceptional in its amount of space and light. It has three fixed overhead windows from the foredeck, plus two opening deck hatches and two more windows with Venetian blinds. The double bed is set amidships. Down a small step on the port side is a dresser and makeup table and a walk-in closet. To starboard is another cabinet and then a large head with a full-sized shower. There’s even room for a washer and dryer.

A VIP guest cabin is on the starboard side with a vanity. The third cabin is on the port side with two berths.
