Volvo Penta just introduced the next generation of its D4 and D6 diesel engines, the first major changes since they were first introduced in 2003. The new engines will deliver more power and will be more reliable and more economical; indeed, they can cut operating costs by one-third. Beyond the newly redesigned engines, Volvo also is introducing an updated IPS pod drive and an upgraded Electronic Vessel Control System.

So far, Volvo has delivered more than 100,000 of the D4 and D6 engines in three applications: IPS, Inboard and Aquamatic sterndrive. The new engines have been reengineered to deliver more power and torque, increased maneuverability and easier servicing and maintenance.

The new D4 and D6 (the D6 is pictured above) are Volvo’s most technically-advanced package. They ensure that maximum power is delivered across the entire speed range, delivering between 150-hp and 480-hp. The D4 tops out at 320-hp, while the D6 goes up to 480-hp. Power is now increased by 10 percent.

Most of the components on the engines have been reengineered; they have a new engine management system, new fuel injection system, new turbocharger, new supercharger, new cylinder head, pistons and valves. They have a stronger crankshaft to handle bigger loads. Volvo says they will cost less to maintain because they have longer service intervals and fewer service items.

On its IPS pod drives, Volvo is introducing a new hydraulic clutch for silent and smooth shifting, and steer-by-wire is now standard.

The new generation of Volvo’s Electronic Vessel Control – EVC2 – is its first major upgrade also since 2003. It connects and manages internal communications between the engine and the display screens. EVC2 now has an all new operating system, which is able to connect more things into the ecosystem of the boat. It has one connection point, for software downloads and diagnostics. An On-Board Service Assistant gives real time maintenance info. Read more:
