New Lexus LY 650 Heading for Lauderdale Debut

The brand-new Lexus LY 650, the first yacht developed by the luxury car maker, will make its debut at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, starting Oct. 30. The new Lexus will be powered by twin Volvo 900-hp IPS1200 pod drives, delivering a top speed of more than 30 knots.

The boat is a true multi-national product. Developed by the upscale Japanese car company, it was designed by the Italian studio of Nuvolari Lenard, and manufactured at the Marquis yard in Pulaski, Wisconsin. It is the result of Lexus’ desire to expand beyond the automotive market.

“The LY 650 symbolizes the challenges taken by Lexus, which aspires to be a true luxury lifestyle brand, to venture beyond the automobile,” says Akio Toyoda, president of Lexus’ parent company Toyota. “I am truly looking forward to seeing the advanced, high-quality LY 650 display its beauty on oceans across the globe.”

The new Lexus will have three luxurious staterooms on the accommodations deck, all with en suite heads and showers. Seating in the salon (the sofas and two captain’s chairs facing the helm) will all be covered in white leather, made to look like the interior of a Lexus car.

The flowing exterior is designed to be similar to some popular Lexus cars, particularly the LC coupe and LS sedan. Lexus says the yacht will have “exquisite” attention to detail. It has an optional two-tone color scheme with metallic accents to contrast with the bright white interior.

Base price for the LX 650 is about $3.6 million, or the equivalent of the base price for 81 Lexus RX SUVs.
