New Compact ThrowRaft PFD: Easy To Store, Easy To Use

Here’s something that you might want to get for your boat, or even for your ditch bag: The new ThrowRaft compact, throwable Personal Flotation Device that inflates into a life-saving “raft” in seconds. It’s approved by the Coast Guard as a Type IV PFD, meaning it must be immediately accessible on the boat and can be thrown to a person in the water to keep him or her afloat until rescued.

One appealing feature of the ThrowRaft is its compact size. It’s much smaller than the traditional Type IV PFDs – buoy rings or seat cushions. Since it’s small, measuring 11 inches by 4 inches by 3 inches when it’s  packed, it’s easy to store on board; you can put it just about anywhere. The ThrowRaft is also easy to throw, whether still packed or inflated. The company, based on Fort Lauderdale, says you can throw it 40 feet. (See the video, below.)

The ThrowRaft inflates when it’s submerged, or you can inflate it by pulling on toggle. The “raft” inflates to 22 inches by 21 inches, and it has web straps on each side so you can put your arms through and keep yourself afloat. It’s a good safety device on its own, or it can be used for back-up buoyancy with a life jacket. And it’s colored a high-visibility yellow so it’s easy to see in the water.

The basic TD2401 ThrowRaft costs $149. You also can buy a mounting case to put it on a bulkhead or other spot on your boat for $84.99.
