New Wooden Boats 40: A Custom, 40-knot Day Cruiser

The new WB40’ is an example of what a world-class designer and builder can do for a client who knows just what he wants. The new lightweight day cruiser uses cutting-edge technology, with a combination of wood and advanced carbon composites, to deliver a fuel-efficient, 40-knot performance.

The WB40’ was built by Wooden Boats, which was founded eight years ago in Viareggio, Italy, by Marco Arnaboldi. Earlier, he had founded AB Yachts with his father to build high-end, custom tenders for such builders at Benetti, Pershing and Baglietto, among others. Studio Arnaboldi is known for designing elegant, fast superyachts.

The European client for the WB40’ said he wanted a fast, lightweight day cruiser with classic lines. Powered by twin 420-hp Yanmar diesels tied to MJP 250x waterjets, the WB40’ has a top speed of 40 knots and a cruising speed of 36 knots.

The hull and deck are made of sandwiched layers of multi-directional mahogany plywood and pre-preg carbon fiber using the epoxy vacuum system. Arnaboldi says “the advantage was that we could create unique custom boats without having to invest in expensive molds and tooling.”

The boat has a deep-V hull which works well with the waterjets while delivering excellent seakeeping abilities at higher speeds. An open boat, the 40’ can carry up to 14 people, and many of them can lounge on sun pads at the same time. There’s a large sun lounge on the foredeck, there’s a high-low table in the cockpit that can be converted into a sun lounge, and there’s a third lounge aft above the engine compartment.

The helm station is raised above the main deck for optimal visibility. It has joystick controls for fingertip maneuvering at low speeds and around the docks. An open galley is just aft of the helm station, with a sink, countertop, two burner stove and fridge.

Below, the WB40’ has a double bed and a head with a shower.
