Here’s some interesting news if you’re thinking of getting a new outboard for your dink or RIB. EPropulsion just announced its 2021 model lineup with seven electric outboards, ranging from 3- to 9.9-hp, including the first with hydrogeneration capabilities.

A Hong Kong company founded in 2012, ePropulsion now has standardized its lineup. All new motors are built on a 48-volt architecture to allow greater flexibility and a consistent performance delivering up to 3,000 charging cycles. The new motors also come with an easy-to-wear safety wristband, instead of a kill switch, and their Spirit battery is said to be the first floating battery on the market.

The hydrogeneration feature means the battery can be charged while traveling from 4 to 10 knots. And the new Evo Tiller, compatible with most ePropulsion motors, has an integrated display that provides information about power, voltage, remaining runtime, and battery level; it’s also backlit for easy reading.

With all of these features, Danny Tao, the CEO of ePropulsion, says, “Our 2021 lineup includes the most powerful, versatile and advanced electric motors on the market.”

This year the company’s 6-hp Navy motor has a brushless direct drive, and it’s made for quiet, reliable, and maintenance-free operation in fresh or salt water. The company also has 3-, 6- and 9-hp pod drives, intended for sailboats; they can be ordered with folding props.

All electric outboards, of course, are quiet and emissions free. They can be particularly attractive for owners of diesel-powered cruising boats, who might not want to carry separate gas fuel for their RIBs. Read more:
