If you want to arrive at your next cruising destination in style, a restored classic 1947, 80-foot Trumpy raised-pilothouse motoryacht should do the job.

The owner says he spent $4 million, three years and 233 gallons of varnish restoring the Trumpy, now named BB, bringing it back to its original condition. The restoration included rebuilding the engines, twin 1961 234-hp Detroit 6-71 naturally-aspirated diesels. The boat cruises at 10 knots and tops out at 13 knots (but on this beauty, who’s in a hurry?).

The boat’s hull was built at the Trumpy/Mathis yard in Camden, New Jersey, and then towed to the then-new Trumpy yard in Annapolis, where it was finished and launched. The Trumpy yard operated there until the early 1970s, building more than 400 Trumpys; about 90 are still floating today.

In the post-war period, Trumpy built yachts for the rich and famous, including Howard Hughes and the Guggenheim, DuPont, Chrysler and Dodge families. This boat was built for George W. Codrington, of Cleveland, a vice president of General Motors.

A review of the yacht in Rudder magazine in 1948 said it was “a well-blended combination of seaworthiness, sleek lines, good turn of speed, ease of handling, sturdiness, compactness with comfort, reliability, and the ability to go anywhere her owner desires.” Well, what else could you want in a new yacht?

At the time, the new Trumpy had all the amenities of home, plus state-of-the art communications, including a ship-to-shore telephone in the owner’s cabin so he could talk to his office while he was cruising.

The boat has three staterooms: The master with a queen-sized bed, four opening portholes, period bedside reading lamps and an en suite head; a twin stateroom, and a third with bunk beds. There are also two separate crew cabins with one head and a captain’s cabin.

The butler’s pantry has a fridge, coffee maker and ice machine, then there’s a card room with a cocktail table, and a large dining area with a curved banquette and a table for eight guests.

The restored BB also has a few amenities not found on any boat in 1947, including a pop-up 48-inch, flat-screen TV in the master stateroom, and air conditioning throughout the yacht.

After the restoration, the owner planned to spend time cruising in the Bahamas, but he came down with the Covid virus. The Trumpy now is for sale at Luke Brown in Fort Lauderdale for $1,955,000.
