Here’s a look at some of our favorite pictures from the U.N. World Oceans Day photo competition, which drew 1,400 images from around the world.

The pictures show a wide array of marine creatures and habitats, and they were divided among six categories: Oceanic Discoveries, The Ocean: Life & Livelihoods, Above Water Seascapes, Underwater Seascapes, Faces of the Sea, and Digital Ocean Photo Art. The winners were chosen by a jury of world-famous photographers and artists.

The top picture of the mako shark off the coast of Baja California was taken by Evans Baudin from the U.S.; it was third in the Faces of the Sea category. Here are some others:

Taken by Renee Capozzola from the U.S., this photo of two fishermen off Adonara Island in Indonesia won The Ocean: Life & Livelihoods category.

Paweł Zygmunt from Poland won the Above Water Seascapes category with this aerial shot of Kalsoy in the Faroe Islands.

This shot of a sea lion pup in a cave off Baja California by Nur Tucker from the UK won the  Underwater Seascapes category.

A bit of fancy, or political theater, this image by Brett Stanley of Australia won second place in the Digital Ocean Photo Art category.

First place in the Faces of the Sea category, this picture of baby goosefish by Sayaka Ichinoseki  from Japan won first place in the Faces of the Sea category.

Marchione Giacome from Italy won second place in the Underwater Seascapes category with this picture of sardines off the coast of Cebu in the Philippines. Read more:
