In a major move for electric-powered small boats, Zodiac and Torqeedo just announced that they are collaborating in a new eOPEN range of Zodiac RIBs with electric power by Torqeedo.

Zodiac, the largest name in RIBs, and Torqeedo, the largest name in electric boat motors, will introduce the new eOPEN range at the Cannes Yachting Festival starting Sept. 7. There will be more details at that time.

Zodiac already has made an inroad in the electric power market, winning a Gussies Electric Boat Award last year for its eJET450, an under 26-foot RIB designed specifically as a tender for large yachts. It was powered by a Torqeedo Deep Blue 50kW motor.

The new eOPEN line shows a commitment to electric power across a much wider market. The eOPEN range starts with two sizes, a 10’ 2” RIB and an 11’ 2” RIB, that come with Torqeedo drive systems including a motor, batteries and charger.

“We have designed this range for today’s and tomorrow’s consumers,” said Fanny Revert-Ciavattini, Zodiac’s product marketing manager. “These two new 100 percent electric models meet the new needs of customers: no maintenance, no noise, no servicing, less pollution, simple and responsive driving, and an affordable price.”

The new eOPEN ribs will have a range of 50 minutes at 12 knots after a full charge. They will have four or six seats and two lockers; options including a Bimini, rear ladder, lift kit and Fusion audio system.

“We were thrilled to partner with Zodiac on their eOPEN line of electric RIBs,” said Dr. Michael Rummel, managing director of Torqeedo GmbH. “It’s an iconic, yet innovative company that has a finger on the pulse of what customers want, and when.” Read more:
