Aquila Starts New Line of Offshore Cats

Aquila Power Catamarans just announced that it’s starting a new line of offshore boats called the Aquila 28 Molokai Power Catamaran and the Aquila 28 Molokai Cuddy Power Catamaran.

Aquila says the Molokai name was chosen because the new cats are designed to perform like the boats that cruise in the Pacific among the Hawaiian chain of islands.

“Aquila enters the offshore segment with a modern twist on a proven Hawaiian layout by shifting the paradigm of innovative boats and designs,” said Lex Raas, the president of Aquila Catamarans.

Until now, Aquila has made power cats from 28 to 70 feet. The boats are made by the Sino Eagle Yacht Company in China and sold to individuals as well as to the MarineMax Vacations charter fleet.

The hulls on the new Molokai cats have a sharp bow that tapers to a planing pad. The hulls are set wide apart, providing for large side decks around the center console, and making low speed docking and maneuvering easier.

With twin 200-hp Mercury Verado outboards, the Molokai cats top out at about 39 knots. At a speed of 10 knots, the range is about 300 nm.

The boats come up on plane at a relatively low speed and they handle well even in gnarly sea conditions, providing a soft and safe ride for everyone on board. Two seats built into the transom fold down; there are two seats at the helm. Visibility is excellent from the helm in all directions.
