Fjord Launches Owner-Friendly 53XL Flagship

Fjord just launched its new 53XL flagship, a 34-knot luxurious T-top cruiser designed for relaxing and entertaining on board. It also offers a high degree of customization, on both the main deck and the accommodations deck, for a production boat.

Starting in the 1950s, Fjords were originally built in Norway, but Hanse Yachts bought the company in 2007, and they’re now built in Germany. But the basic looks remain the same, with a plumb bow, minimalist post-modern lines, and a low profile.

The wide teak side decks are both safe and user-friendly. It’s easy to move from one end of the boat to the other, from the large sun lounges on the foredeck to the large sun lounges in the cockpit.

Under the T-top, three ergonomic pilot seats face the helm, with three 19-inch screens. Twin outdoor galleys are amidships (see picture below), while a versatile dining area is on the aft deck. The sun pad there is mounted on hydraulic arms and lifts up to reveal the tender garage. The teak swim platform also works on hydraulics and can be lowered for water sports.

Below, owners can customize the accommodations area to suit their own needs, but the basic layout has two cabins, with en suite heads, plus a separate crew cabin. The master stateroom is forward with a double berth, three skylights, and a full head with a separate shower and wooden seat.

A lobby occupies a center section, and the guest cabin with twin berths is on the starboard side. An optional crew cabin (or extra storage space) is on the port side, with separate access from the main deck for privacy.

Standard power for the Fjord 53 comes from twin 550-hp Volvo IPS700 pod drives, delivering a 32-knot top speed. Optional 600-hp Volvo IPS800s produce a top speed of 34 knots. Either way, the boat has fingertip joystick controls for easy low-speed maneuvering and docking.

Specs: 54’9”; Beam: 15’9”; Draft: 4’4”; Disp.: 39,242 lbs.; Fuel: 550 gals.; Water: 103 gals.; Power: 2×550-hp Volvo IPS700 pod drives. Read more:
