Lyman-Morse Completing Hood 35 Hardtop Express

Hull number one of the instant-classic Hood 35 Lyman-Morse Hardtop Express is nearing completion in Thomaston, Maine, and will be launched this summer. And Lyman-Morse is already working on hull number two, a flybridge version, that will be ready next year. (The boat is also offered in a soft top version as a day boat.)

In any configuration, the new 35 has the elegant, Down East lines that never go out of style. And it has superior performance from twin 440-hp Yanmar diesels with Hamilton water jets. The water jets, of course, offer a safety factor and low draft of just 2’ 1” for cruising in thin water or pulling up to a beach or sand bar for a picnic.

With the Yanmars, the new Hood has a projected cruising speed of more than 30 knots, and a top speed of 38 knots. Power options include outboards and Volvo D6-440 I/Os, delivering a top speed of 40 knots.

The 35 is the second collaboration between Lyman-Morse and C.W. Hood, in Marblehead, Massachusetts, following the C.W. Hood 57, designed by Chris Hood and Stephens Waring Yacht Design in Belfast, Maine. Hood designed the new 35.

Designed for day or long-weekend cruises, the new 35 has a cold-molded, wood composite hull using Douglas fir and western red cedar. You can enter the boat via a centered door from the swim platform to the cockpit, which has seats in each corner. The salon has flanking settees on each side, and pedestal seats forward for the captain and mate.

Below, the boat has an open plan, with a centerline queen berth forward, a galley with a single-burner cooktop, front-loading fridge and sink on the port side, and a head with shower to starboard.

“The 35 is striking a chord with different owners who are unable to find what they’re after elsewhere in the market,” says Drew Lyman, the president and owner of Lyman-Morse. “We’re looking at an heirloom-quality feel with an interior showing the hull’s structural elements.”
