Helmsman 37 Sedan: An Affordable Cruiser

The Helmsman 37 Sedan is an affordable single-diesel, comfortable trawler with everything you need for a liveaboard or coastal cruiser. It comes with one or two cabins, and you also can use the second cabin as an onboard office.

The Helmsman fleet ranges from 31 to 54 feet. The 37 is a slightly simpler version of the popular 38 Pilothouse model. Standard power is one 250-hp Cummins diesel; the boat comes with both bow and stern thrusters to make maneuvering easy around a dock.

Helmsmen are built in Fuzhou, China, and are designed for owners who want a quality cruising boat but don’t want to overpay for it. They also are built to require minimal exterior maintenance. The idea is to use and enjoy the boat, not to spend your time taking care of it. The one-stateroom version costs $541,000, well equipped in Seattle.

The 37 has a semi-displacement hull with soft chines, a deep forefoot, wide sections aft for stability, a full keel to protect the running gear with a stainless-steel skeg and a large rudder for maneuverability.

The interior and exterior are all in the classic trawler style. The salon has a U-shaped settee aft to port with a table, opposite the galley to starboard. There’s another L-shaped settee forward, across from the single seat facing the helm.

Up top, the flybridge has an L-shaped seat on the port side. The helm seat is centered, with a matching seat to starboard. Below, the main cabin is forward with a queen bed and access to the head, with a separate shower. The second cabin, with an athwartships berth, is to port.
