Elling E4: Tough-As-Nails Cruiser

To say that the 49-foot, Elling E4 cruiser is built to be a safe boat is a bit of an understatement. Just take a look at the video below, showing the boat doing a complete rollover, with company head Anton van den Bos at the helm.

And that’s a standard E4, complete with a washer, dryer, pop-up TV and furniture. After the boat righted itself, van den Bos fired up the boat’s 425-hp Cummins and went out for a spin around the harbor.

Because they’re built like a lifeboat, Ellings have a CE ocean Category A rating for safety. Back in 2007, three Elling E4s did cross the Atlantic, traveling from the Canary Islands off Africa to St. Martin in the Caribbean in 16 days.

You don’t have to plan a transatlantic crossing to enjoy an Elling. The E4’s draft of just 3’ 9” means you would be just comfortable doing the Great Loop or cruising along the ICW. And the air draft of 11’ 3” means you could slide under a lot of bridges along the way.

The Elling E4 has three cabins with six berths and two heads with showers. It’s a luxury cruiser, with a wine cellar and a heated towel rack in master head. The helm chair in the raised pilothouse has a pneumatic base to absorb shocks in bad weather.

Ellings are built by Neptune Marine Shipbuilding in the Netherlands. They started with a 45-foot E3 in 1998, subsequently adding the 49-foot E4, which basically was the same boat, but with larger dimensions. A 65-foot E6 was added more recently.

The semi-displacement hull on the E4 is laid up with fiberglass reinforced with two layers of Kevlar aramid fiber used in aerospace and military applications. The boat has a full keel and is powered by a single diesel with a straight shaft drive. With a 435-hp Volvo, the boat tops out at 17 knots, and has a range of 1,600 nm at 6.5 knots. It has both bow and stern thrusters.

You can board the boat via the swim platform, but you also can board from entrance gates on each side. Each side has a set of stainless steel steps directly below the entrance gate designed into the side of the hull; they provide steps at three levels, guaranteeing easy access from almost any height of a floating dock.

The raised afterdeck has two settees, a table and stairs leading down to the swim platform. Large, safe side decks lead to the foredeck, with twin sun pads, and a door opens to the salon, with a large, oval settee to starboard, and two chairs on the port side flanking a cabinet with the pop-up TV.

In the wheelhouse, a retractable sunroof is overhead, and you can open the center pane of the large windshield for even more fresh air. There’s a single helm seat, and a settee with a table on the port side. A circular staircase leads to the salon and the galley.

The full-beam master stateroom, with a centerline queen bed, is aft; it has a large en suite head and shower. The forward stateroom has two single bunks set in a V configuration, and there are twin berths in the starboard-side cabin; it also could serve as an on-board office.
