New Kadey-Krogen 58: Made for Adventure

The new Kadey-Krogen 58 EB (Extended Bridge), on display at the Palm Beach show last month, is a solid, full-displacement cruiser ready for an adventure anywhere in the world. With a single 325-hp John Deere diesel, the 58 has a range of 3,775 nm at 7 knots; speed up to 10 knots, and the range drops to 1,050 nm, still a very respectable performance. (Twin engines are optional.)

Kadey-Krogen is hardly a newcomer to the world’s blue-water cruising fleet. Indeed, it has made more than 600 cruising boats over the past 45 years at its yard in Taiwan, earning a reputation for trawlers that provide easy living and excellent sea-keeping abilities in waters around the world.

The 58 EB maintains that tradition with its efficient hull design. A deep forefoot and rounded entry eliminate pounding and provide a soft ride even in nasty head seas, while the wineglass stern provides a comfortable ride in following seas.

Designed to be run by an owner-operator, the 58 can serve as a long-term liveaboard or long-range cruiser for a couple, while its basic three-cabin, two-head layout has plenty of room for a large family. Like other Kadey-Krogens, the 58 has an extra-large galley, with home-size appliances, to keep everyone on board fed and happy, whether for an intimate party on the dock or a month in the Caribbean.

The boat’s Portuguese bridge has wing stations with engine and thruster controls so the captain can have line-of-sight while docking, a major advantage. And port and starboard doors from the pilothouse offer easy access to the side decks. The pilothouse has two Stidd chairs facing a made-for-cruising helm; a raised L-shape settee and table are a bit aft.

The flybridge also has two Stidd helm chairs, a summer kitchen for eating and entertaining, and an outdoor dining and lounging area. The boat deck, with a crane, is aft.

The aft cockpit is protected by the overhang from the flybridge, and it has a settee against the transom facing a teak table. The aft and side decks are teak. There’s a solid door opening to the swim platform, and there are also two side boarding doors, port and starboard.

Below, each owner can configure the accommodations for his boat, but the basic plan has the master stateroom forward, with a large head with separate shower. A second stateroom has two beds and access to the day head. The third cabin is often configured as an on-board office, with a day bed, but it also can be designed as a traditional third stateroom.
