One man was killed and his brother was injured when their 23-foot fishing boat collided with a 154-foot Coast Guard cutter about 4 nm off the north coast of Puerto Rico on Monday.

The Coast Guard says that the crew of the fast-response cutter Winslow Griesser (pictured above) reported the collision about 2:20 in the afternoon, saying the cutter was in a collision with a fishing boat named Desakata. The accident was near Dorado, which is just west of San Juan.

The Coast Guard station in San Juan sent a 45-foot fast boat to the scene. Meanwhile, the crew of the Winslow Griesser retrieved the two brothers from the fishing boat. Carlos Rosario had been killed. His brother, Samuel Rosario Beltran, was injured.

The Winslow Griesser took the injured brother to the Coast Guard base in San Juan, where EMS personnel carried him to a local hospital.

Capt. José E. Díaz, commander of the Coast Guard base in San Juan, said the service mourned the death of Carlos Rosario and said “a thorough investigation will be completed to determine the causal factors that led to this collision so that we can prevent this type of incident for occurring in the future.”

The National Transportation Safety Board will lead an investigation into the collision. Read more:
