New Cosmopolitan 66 Electric Cat

The aluminum-hulled Cosmopolitan 66 is a new player in the rapidly growing electric catamaran scene.

Built by Cosmopolitan Yachts, a Spanish company, the 66 is designed for unlimited offshore cruising, with a focus on its sea-keeping abilities, electric technology and respect for the environment. The company founders, Christian Braun, a German entrepreneur and active yachtsman, and Ivan Salas Jefferson of Iddes Yachts, chose aluminum because of its ability to be recycled, as well as for its light weight. The new cat has foils between its hulls to provide lift and deliver a soft ride.

The Cosmopolitan 66 has two propulsion packages. The standard package has two 100kW diesel generators, a 300kWh battery bank, and two 180kW electric motors. The upgraded package has two 150kW generators, a 450kWh battery bank, and two 380kW motors.

Solar panels are built into most the available surfaces around the deckhouse roof and the hard top. They can generate 17-19kWp to recharge the batteries.

The Cosmopolitan 66 is marked by the forward rake of the bridge windows and the reverse bow, giving it an ultra-modern adventure-yacht look. Its beam of 35 feet is more than half its 65-foot length, so there’s an enormous amount of available space inside and out.

The decks are wide and there are entertainment terraces fore and aft. The flybridge is almost square. The main salon is encased in thermally efficient glass and it has an open plan, including a massive lounge and bar; the raised bridge is forward to starboard.

The galley can be up or down, and the cat can have as many as six cabins below in the two hulls. The standard layout calls for four cabins, including the owner’s stateroom in the starboard hull with its own private balcony.

Construction is scheduled to start in October in Vigo, Spain. Read more:
