New Electric Cat with Holes in Bow

Most of us don’t want to put a hole in our boats, much less two of them. But that’s exactly what Sebastiano Canto, a very creative London-based designer, has done with his new 21-foot, all-electric catamaran named Enea.

“The main feature is the combination between aesthetics and functionality,” Canto writes, with “a very original hull design” that reduces weight and lateral resistance without compromising the cat’s seakeeping ability. “Less weight and less water resistance equal greater efficiency,” he says.

All that adds up to smaller engines to move the boat. Enea is powered by two Yamaha Harmo 3.4kW electric engines, translating into a total of 10-hp. Canto estimates that the cat will have a top speed of 8 knots. And it will be quiet with no emissions.

So far, Enea is a concept boat, but Canto specializes in designing concepts, everything from motorcycles to megayachts. And he has already earned some serious recognition for Enea, winning a design contest at the Venice boat show earlier this year, as well as second place overall and first place in the electric boats category at the 2022 NY Product Design Awards.

With an 8’ 2” beam, Enea offers a lot of usable space that an owner could customize into dining areas, a beach club, and some serious sun lounging. Modular deck furniture could have multiple uses; the large sun bed aft could be converted to a dining table, for example, and the driver’s seat flips around to provide seating for four people.

Canto hasn’t found a builder for Enea yet, but we’ll stay tuned to see if his concept of a catamaran with holes in the bow takes off. Read more:
