Lyman Building New Monhegan 42 by Hunt

Lyman-Morse in Thomaston, Maine, is building a new semi-custom version of the Ray Hunt-designed Monhegan 42, a seakindly, fast and comfortable cruising yacht.

The new Monhegan was designed as a commuter yacht, carrying passengers back and forth to a corporate island retreat on Lake Ontario. It has seating for 12 on settees in the salon, plus eight more in the cockpit. Below, the arrangement could not be more simple; there’s a small head and lots of cargo space for luggage.

Hunt has designed the Monhegan 42 in four configurations: Flybridge, Cruiser, Extended Hardtop Cruiser, and Open. They’re all available with water jet or traditional drives. This boat has twin 425-hp Cummins diesels with shafts. It cruises at 28 knots and tops out at 32 knots.

Prop tunnels provide a relatively shallow 3-foot draft and an efficient shaft angle. Bow and stern thrusters make maneuvering easier even in tight docking situations.

The Monhegan 42 has wide side decks and high railings for safety. Visibility is excellent all around from the helm station and elsewhere in the salon. Glass doors aft open to the cockpit.

The Hunt design provides a smooth ride in a head sea; the boat tracks easily and provides soft landings. It comes on plane, with the bow down, at 12 to 13 knots.

Several years ago I was on the first 42 in the Monhegan series, a flybridge version, with Drew Lyman, the president of Lyman-Morse. We just cruised down to Port Clyde, which is a treat at any time, but particularly on this boat. I was impressed not only by the classic Down East lines of this Maine-built boat, but also by its overall handling and performance.
