Meet the New MAGBuoy Charging Station

If you’ve been wondering about where to plug in your new electric boat, Magonis, the environmentally friendly boat builder in Spain, has the answer: A new MAGBuoy that serves double duty as a buoy and as a floating charging station.

Magonis just unveiled the MAGBuoy and it will have its first public viewing at the big Düsseldorf show, starting Jan. 21. One thing is certain: With its bright yellow color, the MAGBuoy will be hard to miss.

The Barcelona company says that it’s easy to use. All you do is pull up to the buoy and plug its charging cable in to your boat.

Magonis also says it’s easy to install, although this may be more of a reach. The MAGBuoy, developed by Magonis’ in-house R&D, has a built-in battery. It gets its power through an underground cable that’s connected to the local power grid.

The whole idea is to extend the range of electric-powered boats by creating a new floating infrastructure. If there are enough MAGBuoys around, you don’t have to worry about heading back to a marina, or return home, to charge your boat.

Magonis says the MAGBuoy works on all electric boats to date. Francois Jozic, the CEO of Magonis, says, “Making electric boats, and developing technology like the MAGBuoy that charges any electric boat, means that more people who want to switch from petrol to electric have the infrastructure and confidence to do so.”

Magonis will also display its 18-foot Wave e-550 at Düsseldorf. The new all-electric runabout has a 30kW MAG Power electric thruster that delivers a top speed of 22 knots. The boat can run for 12 hours, or about 30 nm, at 3 knots. Then you need to find a MAGBuoy or another electric outlet to recharge the battery. A fast charge will take the battery from empty to full in two hours. Read more:
