New Cutwater C-288 Pocket Cruiser

The all-new Cutwater C-288 Coupe is a versatile, trailerable pocket cruiser that’s ready for doing just anything you want to do on the water, whether fishing, cruising, picnicking, or even working remotely on board.

The C-288 is powered by twin 250-hp Yamaha outboards producing a top speed of about 45 knots, and a range of about 200 nm at 30 knots. It has a 10-foot beam for stability, and a double-stepped, deep-V hull with Cutwater’s Laminar Flow Interrupters, basically small indentations that help in higher-speed cornering.

The boat sleeps two in the forward cabin, which also has an enclosed electric head and a shower. There’s storage under the mattress, and a flatscreen TV/DVD on the wall. During the day the bed converts to two settee/V berths separated by a table. There are two opening hatches overhead.

Two more people can sleep on the dinette table at night, and there’s a small midcabin tucked under the settee that serves as another sleeping area (best for children) or storage.

Two more opening hatches are over the forward part of the salon for more fresh air, and the side windows slide open. There’s a single seat at the helm, which is fully equipped for cruising with a VHF radio and Garmin chartplotter, autopilot, sonar and radar. A bow thruster and electric trim tabs are standard.

The dinette seats four; the seats face forward for running, while the front seat flips back to face the table for meals. The galley has a stovetop, stainless sink, fridge/freezer, microwave/convection oven, and even a wine cooler.

A window opens in the aft bulkhead to connect to the cockpit, which has seating for six, an electric grill, rod holders and a live well for fishing. One neat engineering feature is Cutwater’s Clear-Path swim platform that wraps around the outboards for easy boarding. With the mast down, the air draft is just 9′ 2″ so the 28 can slide under a lot of bridges on the Great Loop and elsewhere,.

For new owners, Cutwater offers an optional factory delivery experience, where they will spend a day or so on board with you near the factory below Seattle to teach you everything you need to know about the boat. Even experienced owners say this is an experience worth having. Base price for the C-288 with air conditioning is $329,937.

I have to admit that I have soft spot for Cutwaters. In 2015, George Sass, the photographer, and I spent a week on an earlier version of the 28 (powered by a single Volvo diesel) cruising from New York City up the Hudson to Lake Champlain and into Canada on the Chambly Canal and then down the St. Lawrence to Quebec City. It was a great trip and the living on board was comfortable and easy.
