Iridium just launched its new go-anywhere portable wireless device, Iridium GO! exec, that provides global, off-the-grid connections for smartphones, laptops and tablets.

The new GO! exec is a significant upgrade from Iridium’s GO! and is 40 times faster. It enables users to make calls, get email and messaging, share pictures, post to social media, collect weather information, and even send an SOS from a dedicated button. It also serves as a WiFi hotspot for multiple devices. For boat owners, it has an external antenna and fixed installation kit.

The new device is powered by the Iridium Certus 100 service that provides speeds of 22 Kbps to transmit and up to 88 Kbps to receive. It works through Iridium’s global L-band network, and is specifically designed for use by people who are off the grid.

“It’s the most capable personal satellite connectivity device ever created for smartphones and tablets,” Iridium CEO Matt Desch said in an virtual product announcement last week.

The GO! exec’s battery is large enough to provide for extended use, and it can even be used as a power bank to charge a smartphone or tablet directly. It has an application manager that chooses what apps you should use, based on connections, setting, and time and data limits.

“The GO! Exec will enable anyone, anywhere, to file reports, transfer images and video files, use common messaging apps like WhatsApp or WeChat, and access standard office applications from their smartphones, tablets, or laptops,” Desch said. “It’s a small, portable, battery-powered smart companion for your smart devices. There’s really nothing like this product, helping professionals and anyone to stay productive and connected anywhere.”
